Concert Review: Collateral @ The Black Heart, Camden 7th Feb 2019

It’s a job to know where to begin when describing what happened when South East Kent rock band Collateral hit the stage at The Black Heart in Camden Town in North West London.

Their has been a lot of hype surrounding the Roulette Media Records band recently with the release of their debut EP ‘4 Shots‘ at the back end of 2019.

The 4 piece has been likened to bands from the ‘good old days’ of rock and roll such as Areosmith, Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Cinderella and other rock icons from a bygone era.

Their was a massive buzz on entering The Black Heart and you could tell that everyone was totally up for what they were about to witness. There was no support band for the show and to be honest, a support band would have been wasted on such an evening.

The sold out venue filled up quickly and I sure-footedly took my place at the front with the myriad of other press and photographers.

Introducing the band was none other than the Planet Rock Breakfast Show host Paul Anthony, and what an introduction he gave. Anthony waxed lyrical about how this band are “The next big thing” and “ones-to-watch” and how everyone there is witnessing “something very special indeed”.

Paul is a huge supporter of new talent and in his own words, when he sees something special, he gets right behind it 100% and uses all the resources at his disposal to get them to where they deserve to be.

Enter the band to a huge cheer from the audience and from song one the loyal fans of this, and let’s be honest, unknown band, sung every word to every song, even the ones they had not heard yet.

Collateral are putting the ‘fun’ back into rock and roll and the set was whole hour and a bit of high octane entertainment.

Enjoyment aside, Collateral are not just another band. Oh no! They are the real deal and are musicians of the highest order. Todd Winger has to be the best rock guitarist I have seen for a very long time and his face melting solo proved this. The band are so tight and so at ease on the stage. The stage was small and the crowd close, very close, as were lots of camera lenses and smartphones. This did not deter the band one little bit and probably heightened their performance. Todd’s electric guitar and Angelo’s acoustic dovetailed so well akin to the great Jon Bon Jovi and Ritchie Sambora of Bon Jovi fame.
